Geography at Pocklington Junior School

Geography at Pocklington Junior School

Geography

At Pocklington Juniors, we want all our pupils to understand the world, its environments and places near and far, and the processes that create and affect them. We provide first-hand experiences for the children to enrich their learning by visiting local areas of interest.. Our geography curriculum has been created collaboratively across our Trust schools to foster an appreciation of how the world works and of the interconnections between concepts such as scale, community, cultural diversity, interdependence and sustainability. This also means that the curriculum has been developed to reflect Geography in the locality of the school.  The curriculum has been designed to ensure good coverage and progression, fully meeting the requirements of the National Curriculum.

We want to inspire pupils to be curious and fascinated about the world and its people, that will remain with them for the rest of their lives. Our Geography curriculum will equip pupils with knowledge about diverse places, people, resources and environments, together with a deep understanding of the Earth’s key physical and human processes. As pupils progress, their growing knowledge about the world helps them to deepen their understanding of the interaction between physical and human processes, such as farming, and of the formation of landscapes and environments. Geographical knowledge provides the tools and approaches that explain how the Earth’s features at different scales are shaped, interconnected and change over time.

Geography is a subject that extends the opportunities for developing and applying language and mathematics, and enriches understanding of a range subjects from Science, History and PE to Art and Design.  Geography at Pocklington Juniors has been developed to equip pupils to think critically, weigh evidence, sift arguments, and develop perspective and judgment. The pupils will gain knowledge of where they live in Pocklington, Britain, and their place in the world.

Geography at Home

You can help your child to have a greater understanding of geography in our locality by going on local walks and exploring the features in the area.  This could include simple map reading and use of a compass to explore direction.  There are many websites which could also be used to develop geographical understanding such as BBC Bitesize, The Royal Geographical Society or National Geographic Kids
