Physical Education at Pocklington Junior School

Physical Education at Pocklington Junior School

PE

At Pocklington Juniors, PE provides challenging and enjoyable learning through a range of sporting activities including: invasion games, net and wall games, strike and field games, gymnastics, dance, swimming and outdoor and adventure. The school follows the PE scholar curriculum, which aims to develop physical literacy and promote physical activity for life.  Each PE unit taught exposes the children to a range of different sports to equip pupils with skills that can be applied to a variety of physical activities.

The long-term plan sets out the PE units which are  taught throughout the year, following the requirements of the National Curriculum. Pupils participate in two high-quality PE lessons each week, sometimes with the aid and direction of a specialist PE coach. Children in Year 4 swim once a week for 10 weeks during the Autumn term. In addition, children are encouraged to participate in a range of extra-curricular activities throughout the year. Lunchtime sports activities are also available each day.

Children are invited to attend competitive sporting events within the local area as part of the School Sports Partnership. This is an inclusive approach which promotes not only physical development, but also mental well-being. Some of the events are designed competitively, but many other events, such as dodgeball and benchball, are organised for the children to experience the fun and enjoyment of playing a game against other teams. These events also develop teamwork and leadership skills and are very much enjoyed by the children.

Our Physical Education curriculum is designed to expose children to a wide range of sports and sporting activities, as well as being enriched with opportunities for competitive sport outside school. We also develop links with some of the local sporting clubs.

PE at home

Encourage your child to become involved in as many physical pursuits as possible.  These can include activities such as playing outside, going for a walk or run or enjoying a family cycle ride, as well as joining local sports clubs.
